The brilliant blue color in the Common morpho's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. This species displays sexual dimorphism with the males being smaller with more blue while the females are larger with less blue but more patterning.
